Saint Mary's at Western - 2008 Mitchell Bowl 20081116
WESTERN 28, SAINT MARY'S 12
Amid swirling snow flurries and a cool, sometimes cold breeze, the Western Mustangs took a 25-12 lead into half-time, with the margin attributable to two key interceptions, one a 55-yard return for a TD by Craig Butler, and another by Adrian Kaiser returned to the 2-yard line and punched in by John Leckie. Dan Duff scored on a 9-yard run and Darryl Wheeler kicked 2 field goals of 34 and 17 yards, a single and 3 coverts to round out the scoring. On the day, Michael Faulds was good on 18 of 31 passes for 258 yards. His counterpart, SMU rookie Jack Creighton was 13 of 32 for 212 yards, but was not able to break the Mustangs' defense which was stellar, especially in the second half when the game was reduced to a defensive struggle, won 3-0 by Western.
The Stangs now face the #1 ranked Laval Rouge et Or, winners of the Uteck Bowl in a 59-10 blowout over Calgary, for the Vanier Cup in what amounts to a home game at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton on November 22 at 2pm.
Note: approximately 400 photos from the first 3 quarters are lost in the ether, as one of my SDHC cards blew up, so coverage was a little sparse. Hopefully all problems will be solved by next week's Vanier Cup events.
