Two teams, sporting undefeated records of 8-0 entered Tim Hortons Field, knowing one would exit with a loss while the other would claim the Canadian Major Football League championship.
And Saturday night (Sept. 26) the GTA All-Stars, representing the East’s Northern Football Conference were able to call themselves champions of senior football after a nail-biting 39-38 decision over the Calgary Gators, carrying the colours of the West’s Alberta Football League.
The game was hyped as an epic battle and it did not disappoint. The Gators, led by former Regina Ram quarterback Daryl Leason, took the opening kickoff and marched the ball to the 18-yard line where GTA stalled the drive and the Gators settled for a field goal to make it 3-0. Three minutes later the Gators scored a touchdown to make it 10-0 and looked strong as the quarter wore on.
Then after a fumble recovery on a punt return by GTA the All-Stars marched into the end zone with a 59-yard major to make it 10-6 after the two point convert was stopped.
Calgary then scored 14 points unanswered to end the quarter, 24-6.
GTA opened the second quarter with a 14-yard TD pass and 2 point convert to make it 24-14. The two teams then exchanged TDs to make it 31-21 Calgary as the teams took a break at halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless until 6:02 when GTA scored to make it 31-27 when the PAT was missed. Calgary scored nearly three minutes later on a 65-yard pass and run to make it 38-27. That score held until 14:49 when GTA scored a TD to make it 38-33 at the end of three quarters.
The final quarter featured a comedy of errors as the first six possessions resulted in six turnovers with two interceptions by each team in a four-minute span. Just after the three minute warning GTA took the ball and with 27 seconds left scored a TD to make the final score 39-38.
Jahmeek Murray and Loxley Prince of the All Stars earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Game nods while Quincy Van De Cruize of the Gators was the Special Teams Player of the Game.

LATE TOUCHDOWN GIVES GTA CANADIAN MAJOR FOOTBALL CROWN
By Claude Scilley, Sport Kingston
A touchdown pass from Tom Denison to Jameek Murray with just 19 seconds left in the game gave the Greater Toronto All-Stars a 39-38 win over the Calgary Gators in the championship game of the Canadian Major Football League Saturday night in Hamilton.
It was the first national senior title for the Greater Toronto franchise, the reigning Northern Football Conference champion, and the third year in a row a team from Calgary has lost the national championship game.
Murray’s touchdown, his third of the game, actually gave Greater Toronto its first lead. Calgary opened scoring with an early field goal, and the Gators led 24-6 at the end of the first quarter, 31-21 at halftime and 38-27 after Calgary quarterback Jordan Heather, the 2013 Hec Crighton trophy winner from Bishop’s, connected with Oren Doneff with his second TD pass of the game in the third quarter.
An 18-yard pass from Denison to Mark Simone, the second TD reception of the game for the Italian national team member, cut the deficit to five points before the third quarter was done.
Denison, the two-time Hec Crighton trophy winner from Queen’s, was named the Northern conference most valuable player for the fourth time this season. He finished the game with 32 completions from 44 passes, for 348 yards and five touchdowns, but four interceptions.
Murray, Atlantic University Sport rookie of the year at Saint Mary’s in 2008, rushed for 140 yards and had 80 yards receiving.
