NO. 8 GAELS FALL TO NO. 4 MARAUDERS 40-13
By Shawn MacDonald - Queen's Sports Information
The Gaels season came to a close on Saturday as the McMaster Marauders capitalized on Gaels turnovers in an eventual 40-13 win.
The Marauders didn't waste any time in the first quarter as starting quarterback Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont. ran a bootleg after a fake handoff and crossed the goal-line for a six yard score. It was the first rushing touchdown the Gaels defence had surrendered all season.
Gaels starting quarterback Ryan Mitchell of Toronto wasn't on his game in the first as the Marauders intercepted Mitchell on his first pass of the day. The play resulted in a Marauder 29 yard field goal making it 10-0 for McMaster.
The Marauders intercepted Mitchell five more times in the half with four coming from Joey Cupido of Hamilton, Ont. and one from Aram Eisho also of Hamilton who took the ball 58 yards for a touchdown. Quinlan finished out the half with one passing and one rushing touchdown.
Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C. hit a 30 yard field goal for the Gaels only points of the half.
In the third quarter after the Marauders fumbled the opening punt the Gaels would recover. Queen's was forced to settle for another Village field goal.
The Marauders kept the pressure coming as Quinlan hit Michael DiCroce of Hamilton, Ont. for his second passing touchdown of the day making it 40-6.
Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. looked to make a game with it as he gave the Gaels back-to-back first downs pushing the ball deep into the Marauders end. Granberg would finish off the drive with a six yard touchdown run making it 40-13 for McMaster. That was the extent of scoring in the game as the 40-13 score held until the final whistle.
Quinlan finished with 214 yards passing and two touchdowns on 14 completions. He was also intercepted twice by the Gaels. Michael DiCroce was his favourite target as he hauled in six passes for 103 yards and the touchdown.
Granberg was the Gaels most productive player on offence with 128 yards and the Gaels' lone touchdown rushing on 20 carries. Ryan Mitchell finished with 143 yards on 15 completions. Chris Patrician of Toronto was his favourite target with four catches and 69 yards.
Frank Pankewich of Thunder Bay, Ont. was the team's top tackler with eight tackles and a sack.
The loss brings an end to the Gaels 2011 season. With the win, McMaster advances to the Yates Cup where they will take on the No. 3 Western Mustangs.
