Queen's vs. Laurier OUA Semi-final 20031101
Photos of game 10 - the OUA Semi-final versus the Laurier Golden Hawks, lost by the Queen’s Golden Gaels 36-33 on November 1, 2003 at Richardson Stadium.
Queen's recipe for success in this game: stop Derek Medler, complete 300+ yards in passing, run and pass for more first downs and net offense yards, get TD's from Craig Spear, Iain Fleming and Bryan Crawford. Mission accomplished with Medler getting only 67 yards, Tom Denison completing 32 of 51 passes for 390 yards and 2 TD's, Queen's getting 27 first downs and 407 net yards while holding Laurier to 20 first downs and 371 net yards, and TD's scored by Spear, Fleming, Crawford and Mike Hendry...except the Gaels went down to defeat in double overtime.
In what can only be described as a comedy of errors, the Gaels outplayed the Hawks but gave up 4 fumbles, accounting for 24 points. The craziness continued in OT with Laurier outscoring the Gaels 12-9 for the win. Talk about the fickle finger of fate!
What of the season? The Gaels finished with a record of 8-2-0-1 and came within 7 seconds of defeating its nemesis McMaster and an undefeated season, but fell short of the 2002 Yates Cup appearance and too often failed to play four consecutive quarters of good football. Despite great individual and team efforts, the 2003 season ended prematurely.
As the cliché goes, there's always next year, but 5th year Gaels Corey Trudeau, Andrew Moad, Curt McLellan, Andrew Stead and Tom Denison will not be back, while over a dozen other players with remaining eligibility are in 4th or 5th year. To all the Gaels, and especially those that won't return in 2004, let me say thanks for the great memories. It's been my privilege to follow your season as you represent Queen's, and I look forward to seeing how you all move forward in life - better prepared for having been a Gael.
