Before a crowd of 7,500 bolstered by the appearance of the Class of 2009, in a matchup between the CIS 3rd ranked and veteran-laden Laurier Golden Hawks, last year's Yates Cup champions, and the young Golden Gaels team, age came before beauty. The Gaels went down 45-0 on the scorebaord and 484-223 in net yards. Although the score did not reflect a stellar defensive performance, the Gaels held 2nd team All-Canadian QB Ryan Pyear to 17 of 23 passing for 212 yards and 1 passing TD. Laurier's Nick Cameron rushed for 169 yards on 20 carries, including a 62-yard score in the 3rd quarter.
For Queen's, it was a long afternoon for sophomore QB Ali Clarkson who in his 3 quarters of work was 5 of 18 for 56 yards and one INT. Under constant pressure from the Laurier defense, Clarkson rarely had time to set up and find his receivers which were expected to be one of the Gaels strengths this year. The Gaels rushing attack reflected the loss of Bryan Crawford to the Argos, and accounted for 95 yards in total, 40 by Ali Clarkson and 39 by Chris Rogan who with 2 pass receptions and 2 kickoff returns accounted for 103 all-purpose yards. One of the few bright lights on offense was freshman QB Danny Brannagan's debut in the 4th quarter. Brannagan was good on 10 of 16 passes for 110 yards and showed remarkable poise once he settled in. Based on his performance, albeit against many of Laurier's substitutes, he was selected as the Seaway Document Solutions Player of the Game. Other standouts were Scott Valberg who caught 7 passes for 72 yards, the longest a 26-yarder from Brannagan, and Taylor Morasutti who had 2 kickoff returns for 65 yards. Defensively, the Gaels had a far longer afternoon than the Golden Hawks, making 75 tackles to the Hawks 45. They were led by Matt Vickers' 9 tackles and 4 assists, and Adam Ross' 8 tackles and 3 assists. Next stop for the Gaels is against the 1-0 York Lions at home.
