Ottawa at Queen's 20050924
Photos from game 4 (Homecoming!) vs. the Ottawa Gee Gees at sold-out Richardson Stadium, September 24, 2005.
Before 10,818 tri-coloured fans celebrating Homecoming, the Ottawa Gee Gees took one from the Gaels 33-18. In a game somewhat reminiscent of the Windsor game, Queen’s had numerous chances to stay close to Ottawa but by the 4th quarter were behind 33-10 before some last minute drives allowed Queen’s to close the margin to 33-18 and then come knocking on the door in the final seconds.
On offense, Danny Brannagan started the game, played the first quarter and staked the Gaels to a 7-6 lead. Ali Clarkson was brought in for the 2nd and 3rd quarters and was good on 5 of 10 for 27 yards, rushed for another 12 yards, but threw up a crucial pick at the end of the first half that was returned 71-yards for an Ottawa TD. Brannagan was brought back into the game in the final quarter and had several sustained drives, one resulting in an 8-point TD. His final numbers were 18 for 30 for 134 yards, 13 yards rushing and one passing TD. Leading receivers were Brad Smith (5 completions for 52 yards and one TD), Andrew Joyner (4-36), Alex Vanags (4-23), Rob Bagg (3-23) and Marty Gordon (4-17). The ground attack was led by Mike Giffin (14 rushes for 87 yards) and Marty Gordon (4-22).
Defensively, the Gaels had their first quarter lead courtesy of Michael Patone’s fumble recovery and TD run at the 10-minute mark (Patone also had 8 solo and 3 assisted tackles plus a sack for an outstanding day). Other standouts were Ryan Bechmanis with 10 solo and 5 assisted tackles, Kirby Calvert (9+5), Ian Hazlett (8+4) and Dan Bederman ((8+3). The Gaels held Ottawa to 139 yards rushing (vs. the Gaels’ 155 rushing total) and 231 yards passing (21 completions/34 attempts) versus the Gaels’ 23/40 for 161 yards.
Next up are the McMaster Marauders on October 1 at Ivor Wynne Stadium (not Les Prince Field!) Coming off two winnable games the Gaels will be heavily motivated against their recent nemesis who are coming off two straight losses to Western and Laurier.
