Queen's at Western 20051022
Photos from game 8 vs. the University of Western Ontario Mustangs at TD Waterhouse Stadium, October 22, 2005. The Golden Gaels closed their 2005 season with a 50-29 loss to the Western Mustangs. The loss knocked the Gaels out of playoff contention with a 3-5 record.
Despite 4 quick turnovers the Gaels played the Mustangs tough through two quarters, and went into the dressing room up 20-19 on two Brad Smith TD receptions of 45 and 29 yards and two field goals from Ryan Elger. However, Western opened the 2nd half with 3 unanswered touchdowns in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th, Queen's was unable to overcome the 21 point differential, scoring a TD on a Scott Valberg reception and a safety in the last 5 minutes of the game.
Danny Brannagan went 14 of 29 for 275 yards, 3 TD passes, one rushing TD, but 3 interceptions. On the ground, Mike Giffen had a good day coming back after his shoulder injury to record 117 yards on 14 runs and one TD. Dave Weese had the other TD on the ground. In the air, Brad Smith caught 7 passes for 153 yards and his two TD's, while Scott Valberg had 3 passes for 56 yards and a TD, and Andrew Joyner had 2 passes for 58 yards.
On defense, the Gaels played an excellent first half even though turnovers gave Western good field position on a number of occasions. Ultimately Westerns attack was too strong in the second half, especially the third quarter. Mustang QB Michael Faulds was good on 15 of 26 passes for 262 yards, one TD and one INT. Randy Mcauley did the damage on the ground with 128 yards and two TD's while Andy Fantuz had 5 receptions (setting the new CIS career receptions mark) for 111 yards and a TD. Western kicker Derek Schiavone accounted for 20 points with 5 field goals and 5 converts. Leading the Queen's defense were Adam Ross who had 6 solo and 7 assisted tackles, Ryan Bechmanis (4+7), Michael Patone (5+4) and Ian Hazlett (1+8).
