A Homecoming crowd of 10,000 saw the Windsor Lancers hang on to defeat the Queen's Golden Gaels 22-18. The Lancers took the crowd out of the game early scoring three first quarter touchdowns before the student side had filled up. However on the last play of the first quarter RB Billy Burke ran 14 yards for a touchdown to get the Gaels back in the game at 21-7.
A Ryan Elger field goal was all the scoring in the second quarter making it 21-10 Windsor at halftime. In the second half the Gaels scored the only points of the third quarter on a conceded safety by Windsor punter Dan Lumley. The Lancers finally got another point on a 67 yard Lumley punt to make it 22-12 and set up a wild last 2 minutes. The Gaels scored a touchdown with 1:21 left in regulation on a 104 yard pass play from quarterback Danny Brannagan to Rob Bagg. The convert was blocked but the Gaels recovered the perfectly executed onside kick. The Lancers stopped the Gaels on downs however, and despite getting one more possession with 25 seconds left, Queen's ran out of time and lost 22-18. The Lancers improve to 3-0 while the Gaels fall to 2-1. Brannagan was 23 of 52 for 318 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Receiver Rob Bagg had seven catches for 156 yards and one TD and a total of 290 all-purpose yards. Brad Smith was held to 7 receptions for 42 yards. The Gaels running game was limited to just 35 net yards. The final score belied the fact that Queen’s net offense of 345 yards easily exceeded Windsor’s 254, and the Gaels outscored the Lancers in 3 of the 4 quarters.
On defense, once Queen’s recovered from the initial 21-point onslaught, they held the Lancer offense to just one point in the last 3 quarters. The Windsor running attack which had run amok against Toronto and Windsor found a much stiffer test. Daryl Stephenson was held to 88 yards on 24 carries (previous average was 199 yards a game) and rookie Nick Romain had just 37 yards on four carries and no TD’s after scoring on each of his previous 6 carries. The leading tacklers for the Gaels were Tim Poffley(6), Adam Ross(5 plus a fumble recovery), and Ian Hazlett(4) before he went out with a knee injury. Jimmy Allin had the lone Queen's interception. The offensive star for the Lancers was Glenn Mackay who hauled in 6 passes for 88 yards and those 3 first quarter touchdowns.
Good to see Guest Coach Col. Randy Reichert back for the game and congrats to Coach Lorne Milsap for his 50/50 win and donation to the Gaels.
The Gaels’ next game is in Waterloo against the Warriors at University Stadium. Game time is 7:30pm. The Queen's Alumni Branch is organizing a pre-game gathering at the McGinnis Front Row, 160 University W., Waterloo. Location is about three blocks from University Stadium with plenty of parking. Start time - anytime after 5:30pm.
