Queen's at York 20061014
Photos from game 7 vs. the York University Lions at York Stadium, October 14, 2006.
In a do-or-die game to keep their playoff hopes alive, the Gaels squeaked out an overtime win, 16-14, over the York Lions on a Ryan Elger field goal.
Queen’s opened the scoring late in the first quarter as Elger connected on a 27-yard field goal. York responded late in the second quarter as Mike Kosteski hit a field goal from 25 yards out to tie the game, 3-3, at halftime. The Golden Gaels added another Elger field goal in the third, this time from 16 yards to take a 6-3 lead after three quarters.
After a Gaels fumble early in the fourth quarter, York’s Pearce Akpapta punched it in from 21 yards out, giving the Lions their first lead of the game, 10-6. Five minutes later, Queen’s responded with a touchdown of its own as quarterback Danny Brannagan tossed a 43-yarder to Rob Bagg to put Queen's back on top, 13-10. With 26 seconds remaining in regulation, Kosteski tied the game, 13-13, after connecting on a 36-yard field goal.
In overtime, Elger’s 37-yard field goal was the difference as Kosteski’s subsequent 42-yard attempt went wide-left, making the final 16-14 after a conceded point in the end zone.
Brannagan finished the day completing 8-of-28 passes for 202 yards and one touchdown. Brad Smith and Bagg were Brannagan’s favourite targets with Smith collecting 109 yards on five catches and Bagg grabbing 93 yards on three receptions. Mike Giffin had a busy day, rushing 24 times for 118 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Adam Ross had a game-high eight tackles and three assists, Deidrick Sterling had 7 tackles and 3 assists, and Neil Puffer had five tackle, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. On special teams, Rob Bagg had 124 return yards, including a 67-yard punt return.
For York, quarterback Bart Zemanek completed 14-of-26 passes for 229 yards and one interception. Akpata rushed for a game-high 146 yards on 24 carries and one touchdown.
Queen's final regular season game is against the UWO Mustangs at Richardson Stadium on October 21. A win and the Gaels are 4-4 and in the playoffs for the first time since 2003; a big vocal turnout would be appreciated! Say farewell to the CIS' winningest head coach Larry Haylor, in his very last regular season game.
