Queen's at McGill 20080825
Photos from the "Kill McGill" preseason game vs. the McGill Redmen at Molson Stadium, Montreal on August 25, 2008 at 7:00pm.
They first played each other on October 8, 1898, in a time continuum long long ago. More recently, on Sunday, August 26, 2007 at Richardson Stadium, the Queen's Golden Gaels beat the McGill Redmen 39-20 in preseason action. The 2008 version of the old rivalry was no different as the visiting Gaels came away with the same margin of victory in a 32-13 victory.
McGill scored a field goal on their opening drive, and a touchdown by Erik Galas on a 20-yard pass from quarterback Matt Connell early in the second quarter gave the home team a 10-6 lead. Connell was highly effective in the first quarter connecting on numerous short slants until the Gaels got their feet under them in their first live action of the year.
Queen's regained the lead before the second quarter ended and held a 15-10 margin at halftime. McGill drew within nine points, 22-13, on a field goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter before the Gaels pulled away.
Jeff McCann, a freshman running back from Burnaby, B. C., Devan Sheahan and Tim Poffley scored the touchdowns for Queen's. McCann had the go-ahead score on a short run late in the first half as he ran over several Redmen on thwe way to the end zone. Sheahan's TD came on a 16-yard pass from Jansen Shrubb in the third quarter, and was reminiscent of NY Giant David Tyree's miracle catch in Super Bowl XLII, as he seemed to use the same "press it to your helmet and it will stick" method (see photos). Poffley had a 49-yard reception from Danny Brannagan, most of the yards coming after the catch and through a lot of Montreal traffic, with six minutes to play in the game.
Dan Village kicked first-half field goals of 45 and 26 yards. Rookie Mike Petranovic of Etobicoke kicked a 32-yard field goal in the fourth quarter. For McGill, Austin Anderson had field goals of 12 and 45 yards.
Brannagan played the first quarter at quarterback for Queen's and a handful of series in the second half and completed 8 of his 13 passes for 126 yards. Also seeing action at QB were Riley Chisolm, Tom Howes, and Shrubb who was good on 8 of 9 for 79 yards. All-Canadian back and last year's OUA rushing leader Mike Giffin was effective receiving and carrying the football for Queen's in his limited time on the field, largely confined to the third quarter. He had 4 carries for 22 yards. Neil Petrin was Queen’s top rusher with 24 yards gained.
The Gaels did not turn the ball over. On defense, they had four takeaways - a pair of fumble recoveries by TJ Leeper and interceptions by David Rooney and frosh Jeff Letchford - and held McGill to 17 yards rushing.Special teams also scored a safety.
