McMASTER PREVAILS 23-18 AGAINST THE GAELS

The No. 10 McMaster Marauders held on for a dramatic 23-18 win over the No. 8 Queen's Gaels as the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) kicked off its 2010 football season in Hamilton, Ont. on Tuesday evening.
With the Gaels charging, McMaster stopped Gaels wide-receiver Chris Ioannidis of Toronto on the one-yard line as time expired to hold on for the win. The win gives McMaster a 1-0 record and hands the 2009 Vanier Cup Champion its first opening day loss since 2005.
Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C. finished the day 22 of 34, one touchdown and a career high 314-yards in the first game of the post Danny Brannagan era.
Ioannides was Queen's top receiver finishing with four receptions, 103-yards and one touchdown. Giovanni Aprile of Toronto had 67-yards on six receptions in his first as a Gael.
Queen's trailed McMaster by 10-points in the third-quarter but clawed within three-points after a one-yard run by Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., at 12:54 of the third quarter. The two teams went back and forth for most of the fourth quarter until McMaster's Tyler Crapigna of Ottawa converted at 13:59 setting up the Queen's final drive which nearly ended in a Gaels touchdown.
The Gaels led 11-10 at the half, but McMaster quickly took the lead on a 4-yard pass by QB Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont., to Matt Peressini of Hannon, Ont. Quinlan's touchdown pass was set up one play earlier by a 101-yard kick return by Michael Dicroace of Hamilton, Ont.
Quinlan finished the game with 208-yards completing 17 of 24 passes and throwing one interception and two touchdowns.. The Gaels defence managed four sacks on Quinlan with Frank Pankewich of Thunder Bay, Ont. recording two. Sam Sabourin of Stittsville, Ont. posted one in his rookie debut.
