GAELS SEE GOOD SIGNS IN PRESEASON LOSS

The Queen’s Golden Gaels had plenty of positives from an exhibition loss to carry forward to Sunday’s Ontario University Athletics football season opener in Waterloo.
The Gaels dressed 80 players in a 22-17 loss to the McGill Redmen Sunday evening in Montreal.
“Some kids got a good taste of what it is like to be in college football,” Gaels coach Pat Sheahan said.
“Overall I thought it was a very positive experience.”
The Gaels led 6-1 at the half. Queen’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a two-yard pass from quarterback Nate Hobbs to receiver Peter Hannon.
The Redmen, with the Gaels in substitution mode midway through the second half, pulled ahead on two touchdown runs by Dominic Perron.
Queen’s rookie kicker Nick Liberatore, the young man from Dartmouth, N.S., who came to the Gaels attention via his self-promoting video, was good on one of two field goal attempts. He also averaged 37.1 yards a punt, 12 yards more than the McGill punter averaged.
“I thought [Nick] did a great job. He was good on a field goal and just missed the other. His kickoffs were very good. He did a good job,” Sheahan said.
The Gaels finished with 291 yards in offence and 12 first downs.
Sheahan said that considering the offensive line had four of its five starters not participating — Dan Hayes, who played in the East-West Bowl in the summer was the exception – that the unit performed admirably.
“We kind of kept a lid on things a little bit. Guys were not participating because we had some nicks. At certain times we had three freshmen in there,” Sheahan said.
“McGill really threw the kitchen sink at them. They saw a lot of things you normally don’t see in exhibition games,” he said. “Blitzes from all parts of the field. The guys stood up fairly well on it.”
All five tailbacks were in the game. Adam Black’s 36-yard run was the biggest play by either team in the game. Black finished with 63 of the 137 rushing yards for the Gaels.
A plan to have Hobbs split playing time with second-year quarterback Matthew Duffy didn’t go as hoped.
Duffy jammed his thumb on his throwing hand and came out of the game in the second quarter as a precaution.
Kyle Gouveia, the team’s third quarterback, wasn’t available.
“We played Hobbs a little bit more than we had originally intended. That was more a consequence of what happened than the game plan,” Sheahan said. “We would have liked to have played Hobbs less and given other quarterbacks an opportunity.”
Defensively the Gaels held McGill to a single off a missed field goal in the first half.
“At times our defence was very good. Then of course we got into multiple substitutions and you saw the youth on certain units come through,” Sheahan said.
The Laurier Golden Hawks, who the Gaels will face Sunday, also played in Montreal on the weekend, losing 37-33 to the 2015 Vanier Cup finalist Carabins.
The Golden Hawks, Sheahan said, proved against a pretty strong Montreal defence that “they can make some big plays and score points.”
Gaels notes: Matteo Del Brocco, who figures to be the Gaels go-to receiver, had 38 yards in receptions. ... After Sunday’s game in Waterloo the Gaels have a bye on the Labour Day weekend followed by a Sept. 10 game in Guelph against the Gryphons. ... The new-look Richardson Stadium will have its grand opening on Sept. 17. Queen’s announced Monday that Sportsnet will be broadcasting the game live. The kickoff time has been moved to 1 p.m., instead of a nighttime start.

The weather conditions slowed down the pace of the game early as the rain was a constant and neither team was able to sustain any offence to start out the game.
The Redmen got the first chance to hit the scoreboard on offence as Nicolas English lined up for a 23-yard field goal but missed. The ball went through the back of the end zone, and the Redmen picked up a single point.
Aided by a 15-yard run from Gaels running back Jonah Pataki, the Gaels found the scoreboard two possessions later as Nick Liberatore hit a 30-yard field goal to make it 3-1 Gaels.
From there the Gaels defence stood tall. First, a Cam Lawson sack forced McGill deep into their own territory. Rather than punt the ball away they conceded their first of three safeties on the afternoon making it 5-1 Gaels.
After Liberatore missed a field goal but picked up a single, McGill conceded another safety in the third quarter, and Queen's opened up an 8-1 lead.
The Gaels defence stepped up once again as Tyler Roy got the McGill quarterback Frédéric Paquette-Perrault who fumbled and Roy collected on the Redmen two yard line. From there Nate Hobbs connected with Peter Hannon for an easy two-yard score making it 15-1 Queen's.
After a late touchdown in the third quarter, the Redmen put together a big fourth. It started out with a third and goal play where Paquette-Perrault threw a touchdown pass to Joel Soucy tying the game at 15-15.
After McGill had conceded a safety to give Queen's a 17-15 lead, the Redmen pushed through with another touchdown as Dominic Perron caught his second score of the game securing the 22-17 win for the home team.
