GAELS COME UP SHORT IN 27-24 LOSS TO MCMASTER
By Queen’s Sports Information
The Queen's football team (3-4) fell 27-24 to the McMaster Marauders (4-2) on Friday. After trailing 27-16 the Gaels came back in the fourth quarter to bring the game to within three. However, a missed field goal late sealed the game for the Marauders.
SCHOOL DAY GAME
It was a special school day game at Ron Joyce Stadium as the Marauders welcomed students from local schools to the ballgame. The game had an early 11:00am start time
GAME FLOW
The Marauders took the opening drive down the field however, a missed Adam Preocanin field goal only put McMaster up 1-0.
The Gaels responded on the following drive going 77 yards on just eight plays. Nate Hobbs completed a lengthy 39-yard pass to Richard Burton, which put the Gaels in the Marauders' red zone. Jake Puskascapitalized with a six-yard touchdown run for his fifth touchdown of the year. The Gaels led 7-1.
Later in the quarter, the Gaels were pinned within their own 10-yard resulting in a conceded safety. After the first quarter, the Gaels held on to a 7-3 lead.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the second quarter as McMaster's backup quarterback Jackson White ran in a one-yard touchdown to give the Marauders a 10-7 lead.
The teams would trade field goals all the way until the fourth quarter. The Gaels' Nick Liberatore hit three, meanwhile the Marauders' Adam Preocanin had a pair of field goals and a rouge. After three quarters, the Gaels trailed 17-16.
Early in the fourth quarter, McMaster's Jordan Lyons ran in a five-yard touchdown run to extend their lead to 24-16.
After a Gaels two-and-out, McMaster built their largest lead of the game after another Adam Preocanin field goal gave them a 27-16 lead. But much like we've seen before, the Gaels are never out of the ball game.
With less than three minutes remaining the Gaels capped off a four-play, 51-yard drive with a rushing touchdown from Rasheed Tucker. A successful two-point conversion pass followed the rookie's second touchdown of the season as Nate Hobbs found Matteo Del Brocco in the end zone. Just like that it was a 27-24 game.
After the Gaels forced a two-and-out they got the ball back with one last opportunity to tie the game. After the managed to get the ball to McMaster's 47-yard line they set up for a lengthy 54-yard field goal. The kick was no good to end the game.
