ARHEN RETURNS KICK-OFF 100 YARDS FOR TOUCHDOWN, GAELS CAN'T SPOIL LAURIER HOMECOMING
By Queen's Sports Information
The Queen's Gaels (2-4) couldn't stop the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-3) at their homecoming in Waterloo as the Golden Hawks defeated Queen's 52-16 in OUA football action on an overcast Saturday afternoon.
GAME FLOW
After a great return from Nolan Bedard where he ran for 42-yards, the Gaels offence was set up with an early first down in the red zone. Looking to settle for a field goal, the attempt from Ben Hadley was blocked by Daishane Johnson and returned to the Laurier 31 keeping the game scoreless.
On the next series, Laurier quarterback Connor Carusello found Romy Simpson for a 60-yard touchdown pass for the game's first major.
After Queen's gave up a rouge, Rasheed Tucker dashed through the Laurier defence for a big 14-yard run. The field position gained ended up pinning Laurier deep in their own end, forcing them to give up a safety. The Gaels added another single after a missed field goal attempt from Hadley sailed through the back of the endzone. After the opening quarter, the Gaels trailed 8-3.
Laurier took over the game in the second quarter as the nation's leading rusher Levondre Gordon rushed 52-yards for a score. That was quickly followed by an interception returned for a touchdown, a short rushing score and a field goal to see the Golden Hawks jump ahead 32-3.
The Gaels received a shot in the arm with 52 seconds remaining as Ben Arhen returned a Laurier kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to make the halftime deficit 32-10. The return was tied for the sixth-longest in Queen's history as Arhen ties Paul Correale ('97), Bob O'Doherty ('75) and Randy Zaricny ('87) who all had 100-yard returns. The Gaels record is held by Giovanni Aprile who had a 109-yard return in 2011.
Laurier continued to put points on the board in the second half as Their opening possession saw Carusello fire a 54-yard touchdown pass to Ente Eguavoen making the score 39-10 Laurier.
After a special teams touchdown by the Golden Hawks, the Gaels Ryan Licandro was able to find Richard Burton for a 25-yard touchdown strike.
That would be all the Gaels could score as Laurier finished out the fourth quarter with a field goal, safety and rouge to make it a 52-16 final.
