TUCKER AND BURTON EACH SCORE TWICE AS GAELS UPSET RIVAL NO. 10 TORONTO 37-33
By Queen's Sports Information
The Queen's Gaels (2-3) marched into Varsity Stadium and came away with an upset victory over the No.10 Toronto Varsity Blues (2-2) behind a strong defensive and rushing performance.
GAME FLOW
Things didn't start well for the Gaels as Toronto's Nicolas Williams returned the opening kick-off 88 yards down to the Gaels 15-yard line. After a nine-yard completion, Toronto opted for a quarterback sneak to get the first down but a bad snap was scooped up by the Gaels Gabriel Boucher giving the Gaels offence the ball at their own 10-yard line.
Making his first career U SPORTS start, Gaels quarterback Ryan Licandro marched the offence down the field with the help of Rasheed Tucker slicing through the Toronto defence. With Nick Liberatore injured, Ben Hadley got a chance to make his U SPORTS debut and connected from 16-yards out to give the Gaels a 3-0 lead.
On the very next possession, Toronto quarterback Clay Sequeira fumbled and the Gaels defence was able to come up with it as Nolan Bedard recovered for Queen's.
Mid-way through the quarter the Gaels were able to score the games first touchdown. Toronto found themselves in trouble with penalties and a seven-yard rush from Tucker resulted in his first score of the game to make it a 10-0 lead. Hadley booted the ensuing kick-off 72-yards out of the Toronto end-zone for a single to make it 11-0
Sequeira and the Varsity Blues offence got on the board late in the quarter as Michael Lehmann hauled in a six-yard touchdown.
The defence kept the turnovers coming in the second quarter as Thompson McCallum was able to haul in a deflected Toronto pass deep in the Gaels end. Queen's conceded a safety and the score was 11-9 for the Gaels.
The offence began to leave its mark on the ground as the duo of Jake Puskas and Tucker combined for 58-yards to set up a Licandro seven-yard strike to Richard Burton for a touchdown to put Queen's up 18-9.
Puskas added a 41-yard run later to set up a field goal after the Gaels conceded a safety late in the half Toronto was able to kick a field goal in the final minute after a fake punt set them up with good field position.
In the third, the Gaels offence struck quickly. Burton got his second score of the game as he burst towards the sideline and leaped with outstretched arms for a touchdown.
The defence continued to give Toronto's offence trouble as Anthony Federico was able to get his second sack of the afternoon forcing the Varsity Blues to concede a safety.
A late score from Toronto set up an incredible finish as the Gaels went into the fourth up 30-24.
The Burton and Licandro magic came together at the right time in the fourth as the Gaels quarterback found his receiver for 21 and 45-yard gains. That set the stage for Tucker to rumble through the Toronto defence from 10-yards out for his second touchdown.
Toronto made a game of it late scoring a touchdown on a third-down attempt to bring the score to 37-31 for Queen's.
The Varsity Blues had a chance to take the lead after Licandro was intercepted deep in the Gaels end but the defence held strong forcing Toronto to turn the ball over on downs. The Gaels held on in the end for a 37-33 win.
