TUCKER, DEFENCE LEAD QUEEN'S FOOTBALL PAST GUELPH TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED
Queen's Sports Information
Running back Rasheed Tucker rushed for two touchdowns and Queen's defence came up with two big goal line stops late in the fourth quarter to give the Gaels a 14-8 win over the Guelph Gryphons Friday night at Richardson Stadium. With the win, Queen's, ranked No. 6 in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings, improved their record to 4-0 on the season.
Queen's led 14-6 late in the fourth quarter when Guelph drove down the field looking for the potential game-tying touchdown. With less than two minutes to play in the fourth quarter, Queen's defence made a big stop at the one-yard line after a Gryphons' reception on second down, and held Guelph out of the end zone again on the next play, receiving the ball after a turnover on downs.
After Queen's conceded a safety to make the score 14-8, the defence forced a three-and-out to cement the win for the Gaels.
Ethan Martin (London, Ont.) had a strong game on defence, leading Queen's with eight tackles, including one for a loss, and a pass breakup. Eric Johnston (Prescott, Ont.) had two sacks and three tackles for a loss and Anthony Federico (Niagara Falls, Ont.) added a sack to his season total, now up to six. Ashton Miller-Melancon (Montreal, Que.) also recorded an interception for Queen's.
"As expected it was a battle. Well played by what I think to be two high-end defences that aren't going to give you anything easy," said Steve Snyder, Head Coach, Football. "Offensively I think it was a struggle for both teams getting settled in against some strong defences. I thought we did a good job in the kicking game early and we were hanging in there with the field position battle.
"Overall, a great win for the Thanksgiving weekend and everybody around Kingston and Queen's to enjoy a football team that is doing a great job and starting to get hot."
Guelph opened the scoring with a first quarter field goal before Tucker (Ajax, Ont.) rushed for his first of two touchdowns in the second quarter, giving Queen's a lead they wouldn't surrender. Tucker finished with 102 yards on the ground and is now up to 520 yards and four touchdowns on the season.
Quarterback James Keenan (Ottawa, Ont.) finished the game 18-24 for 221 yards and two interceptions.
