SOLES TIES QUEEN'S FOOTBALL SINGLE-GAME TD RECORD IN BIG WIN OVER GUELPH
Queen's Sports Information
Anthony Soles finished with four touchdowns, tying Queen's Football's single-game record, in a 62-11 win over the Guelph Gryphons Saturday in Guelph, Ont.
Soles (Pointe Claire, QC) led Queen's offence with 19 carries for 244 yards and four scores. His four touchdowns tied Jim Young (Nov. 14, 1964 vs. McMaster), Brian Warrender (Oct. 9, 1971 vs. York), Brad Elberg (Sept. 26, 1992 vs. Carleton), and Ryan Granberg (Oct. 15, 2011 vs. Waterloo) for most scores in a game in program history. Soles now also leads the OUA with seven touchdowns through five games on the season.
Queen's jumped out to an early 12-point lead in the first quarter before the Gryphons got on the board late in the quarter with a field goal. Queen's would then score the next 50 points before a late Guelph touchdown, on their way to the 51-point victory.
Silas Hubert (Hastings, Ont.) continued his strong season rushing the passer with three sacks and four total tackles for a loss in the win for the Gaels. Hubert, who now leads the OUA with five sacks on the season, also led the team with seven total tackles.
Darien Newell (Brampton, Ont.) also contributed a sack for Queen's in the win while Aiden Vint (Kelowna, B.C.) recorded his first interception of the season.
"Really solid win for us," said Head Coach Steve Snyder after the game. "We started fast and got stops early, allowing us to build a lead and take some control of the game. I thought we did a really good job playing a balanced style of football and did some good things in the kicking game. Overall lots of mistakes to look at and areas for improvement, but really proud of the effort our team played with. They stayed steady played with grit and pulled off a big road win."
Other scorers for Queen's included Yann Longa (Montreal, Que.), who found the end zone for the second straight game with a rushing touchdown to open the scoring in the first quarter, and Nathan Falconi (Palgrave, Ont.) and Aiden O'Neal (Sackville, N.B.) who recorded receiving touchdowns.
Kicker Tyler Mullan (North Bay, Ont.) remained perfect on the season with three field goals.
Alex Vreekan (Kingston, Ont.), who came on for James Keenan, finished the game 10-15 for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
With the win, Queen's improved their record to 4-1 on the season and remain in second place in the OUA standings. The Gryphons fell to 1-4 with the loss.
