QUEEN'S FOOTBALL FALLS TO MUSTANGS IN 114th YATES CUP
Queen's Sports Information
Queen's Football fell to the Mustangs 44-16 in the 114th Yates Cup in London, Ont. on Saturday. Running back Keon Edwards led the way for the Mustangs with 24 carries for 260 yards and a touchdown.
The loss ends Queen's Football's season at the Yates Cup for the second straight season. The team finished the 2022 season with a 7-1 regular season record before postseason wins over the Toronto Varsity Blues and Ottawa Gee-Gees led to an appearance at the 114th Yates Cup.
"Congratulations to the Mustangs, a very good football team and well deserved victory," said Head Coach Steve Snyder after the game. "I'm really proud of how our team played four quarters and sometimes the score gets a little more because you play aggressive and give them short fields going for it. But we're going to continue to play to win for as long as we can.
"I'm definitely excited about the people we have in place and the way that they work together and the trajectory that we're on because I truly believe that there's something special happening here at Queen's but we've got to continue to work hard to close the gap."
After a scoreless first quarter, a couple of long plays by the Mustangs led to a 13-0 lead in the second quarter. Even Hillock connected with Savaughn Magnaye-Jones for a 57-yard touchdown to open the scoring at 10:41 of the second quarter. And then Edwards broke free for an 81-yard run that led to a 10-yard touchdown run by Yazbeck for the two-score lead.
Queen's would march down the field late in the second quarter, capped by a two-yard Anthony Soles touchdown run to get Queen's on the board and cut the Mustangs' lead to 13-7 at half time.
The Mustangs pulled away in the third quarter, with long runs by Edwards and Yazbeck leading to an early third quarter Mustangs touchdown before a Brian Garrity field goal and 73-yard touchdown pass to Seth increased the Mustangs' lead to 23 points heading into the fourth.
Soles' second touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter cut the Mustangs' lead to 16 points.
Griffin Campbell took a Hillock pass 44 yards for a Mustangs score midway through the fourth quarter and Edwards added a rushing touchdown late in the quarter to give the Mustangs the 28-point win.
"I'm proud of the effort and the commitment level that they have to everything that we're doing and how they care about each other," Snyder said. "We're going to continue to hunt, continue to work, that's the only thing we know. We're not going to rest until probably ever. We'll just keep chasing but I'm certainly proud of the season that they've had and the effort that they put in."
