QUEEN'S FOOTBALL EARN THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY WITH BIG WIN OVER YOURK LIONSi
Queen's Sports Information
Queen's Football team added another win to their record after defeating the York Lions 61-2 Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
After the Lions opened the game with a safety to make it 2-0, Queen's shut them down the rest of the way to complete the 59-point win. Second-year quarterback Alex Vreeken (Kingston, Ont.) had his first start with Queen's Football and finished the game 17 for 23 for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Russell Weir (Oakville, Ont.) took over for the majority of the second half, and he finished 4 for 6 for 76 yards and one touchdown.
"Good to get done what we needed to get done," said Queen's Football Head Coach Steve Snyder after the game. "Definitely a slow start but I think that had a lot to do with their front seven on defence, that's a really good front seven.
"But overall, I think it was just a good win for our guys. Now we get to rest up with the bye week and get a little better."
Vreeken, who played at Richardson Stadium in high school, was thrilled to have his first start with Queen's on the same field, stating "definitely feels different, a lot more people, having the Oil Thigh after every time you score, it's just awesome". Vreeken was happy overall with his first start with Queen's. "I thought it went pretty good, definitely some things we can crack, but it was good."
When asked about his first start and how the team has been around supporting him, Vreeken declared, "last week at Guelph when I had to step in, guys like Richard (Burton) and Walt (Karabin) came over and were with me from the start and giving me advice. This whole week, I have felt loved by the team, it really shows the brotherhood of the team."
Anthony Soles (Pointe Claire, Que.) added three more touchdowns in the win, bringing his total on the season to 10, which makes him first overall in the country in offensive scores. Soles had a total of 41 rushing yards on the day. Jayden Kerr (Brampton, Ont.) also added 78 yards and Greg Jones Sealy (Toronto, Ont.) had 62.
When asked about his accomplishments, Soles said, "it feels great, a lot of people to thank for it, and it is just a great, great feeling."
Soles added about the offensive line, "just week after week, they're doing their job and doing beyond their job and beyond their expectations and keep freezing the defences."
Once again, Richard Burton (Ottawa, Ont.) went over 100 yards receiving, with seven receptions for 113 yards and one touchdown.
"Every game you build confidence individually and then as a unit too," Burton said after the game. "The whole offence, we've been building up from the start of the year. There's still a lot to improve on and we're excited to improve it."
Nico Kwemo (Montreal, Que.) added two more touchdowns, bringing him to a total of four on the season and added 70 yards receiving. Liam Silverson (Kingston, Ont.) also added a touchdown.
"The receiver room is awesome," Burton added. "We really support each other. We're happy for each other. We want the ball to be spread around. It's a great room, close-knit group and always excited for each other."
It was another solid display in the win for Queen's defence, with Liam Sutherland (Ottawa, Ont.) and Sterling Seunarine (Hamilton, Ont.) ending the day with five tackles each. Sutherland also added a sack. Defensive back Ashton Miller-Melancon (Montreal, Que.) added four tackles in the win.
Queen's improved their record to 5-1 to remain in second place in the OUA standings. Queen's Football is back at Richardson Stadium again on Saturday, October 15 at 3 p.m. against the McMaster Marauders after a bye week.
Queen's Football will also hold their annual Tackle Hunger initiative this week. The team will be at the front entrance of Metro grocery store on Barrie Street, collecting non-perishable food items from 3-6 p.m., which they will then distribute to shelters in the Kingston community.
"Our program, every year around Thanksgiving will do the Tackle Hunger program, and that's our way of giving back to the community and trying to raise food for the food back," Snyder said. "Thanksgiving is a great football time and it's a great time to give back."
