N0. 9 OTTAWA SLIPS PAST NO. 10 GAELS WITH A 46-44 VICTORY IN BATTLE OF CIS TOP 10 TEAMS
In a battle of CIS Top Ten squads, the Queen's Gaels women's basketball team dropped a nail-biter at Montpetit Hall in the nation's capital, falling to the Ottawa Gee-Gees 46-44.
Andrea Priamo (Guelph, Ont.) tallied a team-best of 11 points, which included going 7-of-10 from the free-throw line, and added a game-high 11 rebounds to pick up a double-double for the Gaels, while Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) added 10 points and 10 boards in a losing cause.
The No. 10 Gaels (9-2) were riding five-game winning streak coming into Friday night's affair with the No. 9 Gee-Gees, but had that run put to a halt in a low-scoring match where the team's each shot well below their season average. Queen's and Ottawa each worked at an offensive efficiency below 30%, and both have a season average percentage in the mid-30's. Kellie Ring and Katherine Lemoine each picked up 12 points to help the Gee-Gees improve to 10-1 on the season and stretch their current unbeaten streak to four games.
GAME FLOW
The hosts were quick out of the gate, scoring 11 of the game's first 15 points. The Gee-Gees continued to pour on the offence and built up as much as a 14-point lead late in the opening quarter, but the Gaels managed to cut the deficit down to single digits by the end of the first. The guests then used an 11-2 run in the middle portion of the second quarter, thanks in large part to contributions from Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) and Wright, who helped Queen's come within four points of the Gee-Gees going into the halftime break.
The women managed to grab the lead midway through the third quarter after Priamo notched three free-throws in a row and followed that with a jumper to give the Gaels a six-point lead. The Gee-Gees responded by putting together a mini-streak to end the third down by a single point. Queen's went on a 7-0 run to go up again in the final period, but Ottawa clamped down on the defensive end of the floor, holding the Gaels to just one point over the final four minutes of the contest. The Gee-Gees concluded the contest on a 9-1 run, and managed to slip past Queen's to remain undefeated in the New Year.
BY THE NUMBERS
2- Andrea Priamo picked up a double-double for the second time this season
