Christine Wallace of North Gower, Ont., had 15 points and 4 rebounds on six of seven shooting in the Gaels 66-44 victory over the York Lions in Toronto Friday evening, extending the Gaels’ regular season winning streak to 6 games.
Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., was the Gaels second leading scorer with 13 points, as well as contributing 4 assists and 3 steals, moving Moore to the third leading scorer in the OUA with 204 regular season points. First year post player Hanna Koposhynska of Toronto, Ont., led the Gaels in rebounds bringing down 6 boards.
The Gaels had a shaky first quarter and trailed the Lions by 5 points at the end of one. The second quarter was a turning point for Gaels as they gained offensive momentum and outscored the Lions by 10 points. At the end of the first half the Gaels’ had recovered to lead by five points 29-24.
The last two quarters saw the Gaels continue to dominate the Lions both offensively and defensively, holding the Lions to 8 and 12 points in the third and fourth quarters respectively. The Lions were unable to recover from such a large deficit and the Gaels sailed to an easy victory. At the final buzzer the Gaels had a 22 point lead with a score of 66-44.
York’s leading scorer was Emma Dillon of Aurora, Ont., registering 13 points in the loss while Kate Mowat of Whitby, Ont., contributed 6 rebounds for the Lions.
The Gaels current six-game winning streak is their longest winning streak since the 2003-04 season when they had a perfect eight-game stretch. The win also improves the Gaels’ record to 9-4 as they continue to lead the OUA East Division over the Carleton Ravens.
