GAELS CLINCH FIRST PLACE IN OUA EAST WITH 88-66 VICTORY OVER RAMS
By Rachael Urosevic, Queen's Sports Information
The Queen's women's basketball team (16-6) handedly defeated the Ryerson Rams (9-13) 88-66 in a dominant offensive performance in their final regular season game of the season in Toronto on Saturday.
The Gaels finish with a 16-6 record and lock up a first round bye in the OUA playoffs. The 16 wins ties the Gaels franchise wins mark which was previously set in 2003-04 when the team finished 16-6.
The Gaels dominated from the second quarter on, after only leading 18-15 in the first quarter. They outscored the Rams 23-9 in the second and went into the break with a 41-24 lead.
In the third quarter, Ryerson's Mariah Nunes got her team off to a strong start, scoring eight consecutive points (she finished the game with 21). The Gaels were able to regain back their momentum and then some, starting the fourth quarter with a comfortable 22 point spread. The Rams were able to climb back to within 10 with just over three minutes left, but that didn't hold up for long.
Liz Boag (Kingston, Ont.) was the team's offensive spark plug, finishing the game with a game high 23 points. Her fellow starters made some serious contributions as well. Robyn Pearson (Toronto) had 16, Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) had 15 and Gemma Bullard (Guelph, Ont.) had 12 points. An overall team effort led Queen's to their seventh straight win heading into post-season action.
