GAELS DROP FINAL REGULAR SEASON GAME TO YORK 77-64
By Dylan Plain, Queen's Sports Information
The Queen's Gaels women's basketball team (7-13) was in action Saturday evening against the York Lions (4-14) falling 77-64.
The Gaels were able to get on the board first with star of the game Hanna Koposhynska (Mississauga, Ont.) netting four points in the first minute. The Lions were able to stay with Queen's answering with baskets of their own and eventually pulling ahead with strong play from guard Ishanaa Seupersadsin (Markham, Ont.) who scored five points to kick start a 9-6 York run to close out the first quarter.
Koposhynska was stellar for the Gaels in their final regular season match recording a game high 19 points, while also chipping in two rebounds. Rookie guard Emily Hazlett (Fredericton) was also notewrothy recording 14 points, five rebounds and a team high three assists.
The Lions maintained their momentum heading into the second frame, with four of their starters pitching in on an 8-4 run midway through the quarter. A Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) three pointer put a end to York's run until Hayley Finn (London, Ont,) and Seupersadsin were able to knock threes to help the Lions quickly grab back the momentum. York continued their scoring spree closing out the quarter outscoring Queen's 32-11.
Although slow to the start in the third, letting the Lions put up two quick baskets, the Gaels were able to find their scoring touch in the third with Koposhynska hitting a pair of jumpers and Lisa Minutillo (Brantford, Ont.) and Wright pitching in three-pointers. Queen's was able to outscore York 18-15.
Desperate to pull a sweep on their final road trip before the post season and trailing 67-44 heading into the final quarter, the Gaels needed to put points on the board in the final frame. Queen's was able to put some points up quick starting the quarter on a 9-6 run. Unfortunately their scoring differential in the final period was not enough to make up for the deficit they gave up throughout the first half.
