GAELS CAP MAGICAL PLAYOFF RUN WITH CIS BRONZE - Mike Grobe & Jamie Howieson
Kerstin van Bolderen of Medina, Ohio, scored with 1:51 left in the third period to lift the Queen's Gaels to a 1-0 win over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks to win the 2011 CIS women's hockey bronze medal.
“It's just the greatest feeling,” said the fourth year van Bolderen following the game. “We have seven graduating players so we've been working for this. Coming out on top, there's no better way to end your hockey career. This is it for a lot of us so we're ecstatic.”
The goal was van Boldren's first of the season with Elizabeth Kench of Gananoque, Ont., assisting on the game winner.
“I jumped up, it was a 2-on-1,” said van Bolderen. “I saw Liz Kench was coming down the board and she passed me the puck. It was the backhand of my life”
The bronze medal is Queen's first at the CIS women's hockey championship with this being their first appearance. It also was the Gaels seventh win in eight playoff games with their only blemish coming against No. 1 McGill yesterday evening (3-1 loss).
“We're pretty happy, it's a good feeling”, said Queen's goaltender Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., following the game. “Both teams had a lot of shots and it kept it exciting.”
Dodd-Moher was sensational in net recording her first shutout of the playoffs. She turned aside 33 shots collecting her seventh win in eight playoff games. The shutout reduced her goals against average to 1.27 and her save percentage to 0.961% at the national championship.
Fifth year goalie Liz Knox of Stouffville, Ont., made 26 saves in her final appearance as a Golden Hawk and stymied several of the Gaels shooters.
Prior to van Bolderen's goal, the game was a see-saw affair which saw both teams register significant chances.
In the first period, Queen's got the first power play opportunity on a Laurier tripping call which generated a couple scoring chances for the Gaels. After the man-advantage, the Golden Hawks best scoring chance came on a 2-on-1, but the Gaels Dodd-Moher made the save and then another on the rebound.
Laurier received a 5-on-3 late in the first period when both Brittany McHaffie of Guelph, Ont., and van Bolderen were called for interference one minute apart. The Gaels successfully killed off both penalties.
In the final minutes of the first frame Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., rang a shot off the post on the powerplay, but the OUA champions couldn't find a way to solve Knox in the first. At the end of one, the Gaels held a 12-9 shot advantage over the Hawks.
The Gaels started off the second period with another power play, allowing Alex Cieslowski of Oakville, Ont., to wire a shot from the top of the circle. Knox's quick glove made the save to keep the game tied at zero. Laurier then received another short 5-on-3, but couldn't find a way to get the puck past Dodd-Moher.
Midway through the second each team took a penalty, six seconds apart.
In four-on-four play Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., beat two defenders and dished it off to Fiona Lester of Peterborough, Ont., whose shot went wide of the net.
A few seconds later first year forward Andrea Shapero of Toronto was taken down by Michelle Hunt of Mississauga, Ont., and Laurier was awarded a penalty shot. Shapero went stick side, but Dodd-Moher was there to make the save.
At the end of two periods of play, both teams were 0-for-6 with the man-advantage, while Laurier outshot Queen's 14-4 in the second.
Laurier continued to put the pressure on the Gaels early in the third period, but Queen's strong defensive play and shot blocking prevented the Golden Hawks from getting many scoring chances through to the net. Queen's took a penalty late in the frame, but even with a flurry of shots, the Hawks couldn't beat Dodd-Moher.
“It's disappointing,” said Laurier's Knox. “You have to give a lot of credit to Queen's; they are a very good team. We have a lot of respect for them and we knew it was going to be a tough game.”
NOTES: Queen's finished the 2011 season with an impressive 7-1 playoff record, earning six of those wins in overtime... The Gaels played 188:43 minutes of overtime in the playoffs, the equivalent of four more games... One of those overtime games earned Queen's international attention - lasting nine periods (six overtimes) and handed the Gaels a 1-0 series lead over Guelph in the OUA Championship… The Gaels also rode a winning streak of 12 games before losing to McGill on Saturday… The bronze medal for the Gaels caps a successful season for Queen's University at CIS women's championships; Queen's won the CIS women's soccer championship and finished fifth at the CIS women's rugby championship in November.
