NO.5 GAELS START SEASON OFF WITH 3-1 HOME OPENER WIN
Queen's Sports Information
The No.5 Queen's Gaels (1-0-0) welcomed the Laurentian Voyageurs (0-3-0) to Richardson Stadium to kick-off their OUA season at home.
GAME FLOW
The Gaels got off to a quick start and controlled the possession early. Lidia Bradau (Woodbridge, Ont.) sprung Jenny Wolever (Toronto) with a great through ball past Laurentian for a quality chance to Wolever. Laurentian keeper Caitlyn McNamara held her ground to keep the game scoreless.
Queen's continued to create offensive pressure, Wolever broke in on the right side of McNamara and fed a pass to the far post to a wide open Alexandra Doane (Brookside, N.S.) who made no mistake for her first career U SPORTS goal.
Sarah Nixon (Oakville, Ont.) provided a spark off the bench for the Gaels as just seconds after subbing in she deflected a pass that just popped over the cross bar keeping the game 1-0. Nearing the end of the half, Bradua once again fed a nice pass through this time to Rachel Radu (Ottawa) who buried a shot from just inside the box giving Queen's a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Wolever notched her first of the season as she crossed over a defender down the left side of the field and fired a shot off the far post for her first of the season.
Laurentian was able to strike with a goal late in the second half to break up the Queen's shutout as a ball popped right onto the foot of Bianca Briedling who fired it past Gaels starting goaltender Marina Ribecca (Vancouver).

"Being away (at FISU) prepared me for the game today. I was really happy with how the girls worked at training camp, and it showed today. I was impressed by all the first years that came in; I think that they are technical players and that will build on the style of play that we like to play." - Laura Callender
