Queen's Women's Soccer opened their playoff run with a 4-0 win over the Nippissing Lakers in their OUA quarterfinals match Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
Queen's finished the game with 15 shots (10 on goal).
Mattie Strickler opened the scoring in the 11th minute by finding the back of the net with an assist from Cecilia Way. Jenna Matsukubo doubled Queen's lead with six minutes left in the first half.
The two seniors, Way and Matsukubo connected for a Way goal in the 80th minute. Then, within two minutes of being subbed on, Marissa Gravel concluded the Gaels scoring from a cross from Lily Goss.
Speaking with Way and Matsukubo after the game, both were pleased with the win which really came down to the closeness and support of the team as a major contributor to their current success.
Way stated, "our team is so close, and that's how we have gotten this far and how we have been so successful, specifically in the tougher games, that are a little more mentally straining."
Matsukubo added "we are all so supportive of each other, there is no selfishness, no one is in it just for themselves, we're in it to support each other and I think that will carry us a long way."
The Gaels also had outstanding support from the Men's side, who came to support the Women's team in their quarterfinal match. Way and Matsukubo elaborated on how much that support means. "It changes everything, we are lucky to have it on home field and have that support, but the men's team has been crucial in our season and supporting us and being there and pushing us," Way said after the game.
With the win, the Gaels advanced to the OUA semifinals against the York Lions, which will take place at Richardson Stadium on Wednesday, November 2nd.
