VAUGHAN, Ont. - Team East controlled the majority of the pitch at the Ontario Soccer Centre on Saturday, but it was Team West that came out on top as McMaster midfielder Emma Mangialardi (Oakville, Ont.) scored in the final two minutes of play to give her side a 1-0 victory in the inaugural OUA Women's Soccer All-Star Showcase.
Team East dominated the flow of the first half, with their best scoring opportunity coming off the boot of Ottawa Gee-Gees striker Elisabeth Wong in the 38th minute. The Neapean, Ont. native fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box but was denied a goal when York goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini (Newmarket, Ont.) tipped the ball over the crossbar.
Queen's standouts Riley Filion (Alexandria, B.C.) and Jackie Tessier (Winnipeg, Man.) combined on a number of offensive attacks to challenge Fiorini as Team East continued to dominate the first half and control possession. Most Team West attacks were stymied by the defensive efforts of Carleton's Veronica Mazella (Sudbury, Ont.) and Toronto's Diana Esteireiro (Etobicoke, Ont.). When the first half concluded, the score sheet was clean. Fiorini and Sara Petrucci (Bolton, Ont.) of the Toronto Varsity Blues both recorded shutouts.
Early in the second half, Team West appeared buoyed by fresh legs. Jenna Schroeder (Sudbury, Ont.) of the Western Mustangs subbed in at half and used her speed to create opportunities for her squad. Paired with Laurier striker Emily Brown (Waterloo, Ont.) and York's Sarah Wong (Toronto), Schroeder and Mangialardi kept Team East goalkeeper Rachel Bedek (St. Thomas, Ont.) and the Team East defensive line busy.
Team West found the net in the final two minutes of play. Mangialardi received a long pass to the right wing and took the ball upfield before cutting her defender and finding the inside post to beat Bedek and give Team West the 1-0 victory.
McMaster goalkeeper Brittany Duffey (Markham, Ont.) earned the shutout.
