SIMPLY THE BEST, GAELS DEFEND NATIONAL TITLE WITH 1-0 (3-1 SHOOTOUT) VICTORY OVER MONTREAL
By Shawn MacDonald - Queen's Sports Information
The Queen's Gaels women's soccer team became the first women's varsity team in school history to successfully defend their national title as they beat the Montreal Carabins in penalty kicks 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Dawning their red uniforms in the championship match against the Carabins it was Jacqueline Tessier of Peterborough, Ont. with the first attempt on net for the Gaels. Tessier made a deceptive inside out move on the Carabins defender at the top of the 18 yard box but her shot was handled nicely by Montreal starting keeper Martine Julien of Lachine, Que.
The two teams showed their defensive prowess all day as they pushed any chances to the outside forcing attackers on each team to drop shots from far out to the front of the goal. Burlington, Ont. native Alexis McKinty attempted a cross into the box but Montreal cleared any opportunity for the Gaels.
Riley Filion of Alexandria Ont. had the first scoring opportunity for either side as a ball bounced to her right and Filion made an attempt to strike the ball out of mid-air at the net. The midfielder was just underneath the shot as it sailed over the Carabins goal.
Montreal came right back with a great chance of their own when Marylise Monchalin of Montreal made a great through ball pass into Éva Thouvenot-Hébert also of Montreal who found some open space and managed to fire a shot that went just wide of the Gaels net keeping the game scoreless.
Thouvenot-Hébert continued to pressure the Gaels defenders as she pushed the ball down the left wing but it would be Mikyla Kay of West Vancouver, B.C. with a strong sliding tackle to clear any chance.
With only minutes remaining in the first half Breanna Burton of Ottawa drew a penalty inside the box after making a move past the Carabins defender. Kay would step up to take the penalty kick for the Gaels but Julien read her shot and made a diving save, keeping the game scoreless after the first half.
In the second half the Carabins turned up the pressure as Hebert was left alone in front but could not covert on her header that sailed just over the top of the Gaels net. Next it was Emmanuelle Béliveau-Labrecque of Rouyn-Noranda, Que. with an attempt on goal. Gaels starting keeper Chantel Marson of London, Ont. made the easy stop.
Tessier would get her best chance of the game late in the half after being held down by strong Montreal defender Claudiane Tremblay of Montreal for most of the match. Kelli Chamberlain of North Bay, Ont. had an attempt on goal blocked, the shot then popped up in the air right to Tessier who rang her strike off the cross bar and wide.
To close out regulation time the Carabins missed another header in close and the game was headed to extra time.
In extra time the two squads would trade chances before an open attempt from Montreal. The chance came after Gaels defender Brienna Shaw of Vancouver cleared the Carabins first attempt on goal. The ball then found its way to Isabelle Dumais of Longueuill, Que. who missed the net.
In the second 15 minutes of overtime the Carabins corner kick came into the box and there were multiple Montreal chances that were blocked before the ball could be cleared away by Queen's.
With both teams playing a sound and strong defensive game the 2011 CIS Championship match needed penalty kicks to determine the winner.
The Gaels converted their first three attempts (Filion, Kay and Chamberlain) and Marson made two saves and surrendered only one goal on the Carabins first three kickers. With a goal needed Valérie Labelle of Montreal stepped up but her shot was denied by Marson and the Queen's Gaels won their second CIS National Championship in as many years.
Marson, Tessier, Filion and Shaw were all named to the CIS Championship All-Star team while Marson also took home the MVP honours.
This is the third National Championship for Queen's having previously won in 2010 and 1988. This year the Gaels won both the OUA and CIS Championships, they also achieved this feat in 1988.
