Lorna Button of Newcastle, Ont., registered 21 points leading the Gaels to a 3-2 victory over the Ryerson Rams in OUA women’s volleyball action on Friday; final set scores were 26-24, 19-25, 19-25, 25-19 and 15-6.
The Gaels rallied down 2-1 to claim their 10th victory of the season handing ninth loss of the season. Queen’s holds a 10-5 and are tied for first place in the OUA Eastern Division with the Toronto Varsity Blues who were idle on Friday evening. Ryerson drops to 6-9 and maintains fourth place with 16 points.
Button was the game’s top scorer producing 17 kills on 48 attacks. She added four service aces and five digs in the five-set win. Nathalie Gray of Oshawa, Ont., had 17 points on 15 kills and two aces. Katie Matthews of Aurora, Ont., added 16 points while Colleen Ogilvie of Calgary tallied 15.
Kristin Collins of Whitby, Ont., and Julie Lockwood of Calgary split setting duties for the Gaels with Collins registering 42 assists while Lockwood posted 19.
Carli Yim of Markham, Ont., was Ryerson’s top player recording 16 points on 13 kills, two aces and one stuff block.
The Gaels will battle Toronto for first place in the OUA East on Saturday at 4:00pm. Both teams have earned 20 points heading into Saturday’s game, but the Varsity Blues have a game in hand and will face Royal Military College on Sunday.
