WRIGHT MAKES HISTORY IN GAELS' 64-61 WIN AT LAURIER
Veteran Jenny Wright made history on Friday evening, when the Queen's Gaels women's basketball team opened up their final road weekend of 2015 with a tightly-contested 64-61 victory over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
The hometown native, currently in her fifth and final season with the Gaels, hit the 1,000 point milestone in helping her team to the victory, recording 10 points against the Golden Hawks to sit with a total of 1,004 for her career.
Robyn Pearson (Toronto) recorded game-highs with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while four other Gaels contributed 10 each in the victory for Queen's, who improve to 5-1 and remain atop the OUA East division heading into Saturday's game play. Emily Hazlett (Fredericton, N.B.) added nine rebounds to her 10 points, while Kaitlyn Schenck picked up a game-high 15 points in a losing cause for the Golden Hawks, who drop to 3-3 on the season.
In a match where the perimeter game remained relatively cool for both teams (Queen's was 1-of-9 from beyond the arc, while Laurier was 4-of-18), Friday night's match-up saw an abundant 17 lead changes and nine tied scores over the course of 40 minutes. Neither squad was able to build up a lead of more than single-digits before the other began their small comeback bid. At halftime Queen's and Laurier were separated by just one point, with the Gaels holding a slight 34-33 advantage.
As many as there were, all the lead changes occurred in the first three quarters of play, the final coming with an Abby Dixon (North Vancouver, B.C.) lay-up that beat the third quarter buzzer and capped a 6-0 Queen's streak that put the guests up 51-49. The Gaels would not relinquish their hold on the lead throughout the fourth quarter of play, even though the Golden Hawks came within a point of the women on three separate occasions.
Down by two with under a minute to go, Sarah Dillon missed a three-point attempt that would have put Laurier back in front. After Wright hit 1-of-2 free throws, Courtney Bruce missed another jumper from beyond the arc at the buzzer, and the Gaels were able to escape with the victory.
