The Golden Gaels scored 17 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the Gryphons 31-10 and brng their season record to 2-0. Brad Smith had an outstanding day, scoring 4 touchdowns on receptions of 30, 41, 24 and 27 yards. In total he caught 11 passes for 186 yards. Brad was subsequently named CIS Offensive Player of the Week for his performance. Scott Valberg chipped in with 5 receptions for 48 yards, and 7 other Gaels were on the receiving end of the Queen's pivots. Danny Brannagan was good on 26 of 38 passes for 335 yards, the 4 TD's and 1 INT. Jimmy Therrion in his first action ran the ball 11 times for 50 yards to go with Billy Burke's 11 rushes for 49 yards. Ryan Elger rounded out the scoring with 4 converts and a field goal.
On the other side of the ball, Queen's held Guelph to 341 net yards (vs. 440 for the Gaels) on 156 yards rushing and 185 passing. Justin Dunk proved adept at avoiding the Queen's "slow rush", getting quick short passes off to his favourite targets David McKoy and Jeff Keegan but completing only one pass over 22 yards, and utilizing Nick Fitzgibbon (75 yards) and Brad Crawford (23 yrds) on the ground. However, the Gaels intercepted Dunk twice (Matt Vickers and Kirby Calvert) and recovered 4 of Guelph's SEVEN fumbles. Matt Vickers also blocked a Guelph field goal for another turnover right before the half. Leading tacklers were Adam Ross with 8 total tackles, Ian Hazlett (6.5), Matt Vickers (4.5), Tim Poffley (4), Jimmy Allin (3.5) and Kirby Calvert (3.5).
