GAELS FALL TO NO. 4 WESTERN 48-10
Queen's Sports Information
The Queen's Gaels (0-4) travelled to London to take on their rivals the No.4 Western Mustangs (5-0) and were handed a 48-10 loss on Saturday night.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early lead on the Gaels in London for their "Black Out" night that saw the team wear new all black jerseys against Queen's.
Chris Merchant proved to be a thorn in the Gaels side as he started off the game with a six-yard touchdown run at 12:53 and quickly followed up with a nine-yard touchdown pass to Alex Taylor at the 9:13 mark of the opening frame. The Mustangs controlled the game early up 14-0.
Down 23-0 to start the second quarter, Queen's was finally able to get on the board. Nick Liberatore (Dartmouth, N.S.) connected on a 34-yard field goal as the Queen's offence started to gain momentum.
After the defence held Western to a field goal, Nate Hobbs (Mississauga, Ont.) went to work. He started off a Queen's drive mid-way through the second frame with a big 27-yard pass completion to John Bews (Pointe-Claire, Que.) who jumped up to bring the ball down amongst the Western defenders.
Hobbs then found Alex Zulys (Toronto) for a 17-yard reception and followed up on the next play with another pass to Zulys, this time for a two-yard touchdown. After Liberatore connected on the extra point Queen's cut the deficit to 26-10.
Western kicker Marc Liegghio took over from there as he five more field goals for a total of six on the night. Alex Taylor had a 35-yard touchdown run in the second half as well for Western and the final score hit 48-10 for the Mustangs.
