DINOS SECURE VICTORY OVER LAURIER SUNDAY AT UBC
By Michael McColl (UBC Communications)
The Calgary Dinos finished their week at the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championship in style with a battling 20-12 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks at a chilly Thunderbird Stadium on Sunday morning in the 7th/8th Consolation Final.
The Dinos wanted to finish the tournament on a high for their 18 graduating players and they did exactly that, fighting back from conceding an early try to go in with two of their own, holding off the Golden Hawks pressure to secure the win after a couple of late Keegan Neary penalty conversions.
Ben Foote got Laurier off to a great start with an unconverted try in the 4th minute, but the Ontario side couldn’t make their territorial play pay off and paid the cost when Jordy Neary pounced on a loose ball in the in-goal and touched down for a Calgary try in the 26th minute. His brother Keegan kicked the conversion and the Dinos went in with the 7-5 lead.
Laurier again came out strong to start the second half but were hit by a great passing move off a set piece in the 38th minute that saw the ball passed inside to Nolan Kernick, whose power and speed took him through the Golden Hawks to run in a second try and extend the Dinos lead.
The Golden Hawks fought back and capitalized on a short-handed Dinos side in the 47th minute when Wyatt Brown went over for a try, which Adam McNee converted to reduce Calgary’s lead to two.
A penalty saw Laurier penalised and a 14-v-14 game for a few minutes and Calgary took advantage with a Neary penalty with seven minutes remaining to leave the Golden Hawks needing at least a try to get back into it.
With both teams back at full strength, the Dinos game management came to the fore and Neary kicked a 24-yard penalty to seal the deal for Calgary.
Keegan Neary was named Player of the Game for the Dinos, with Adam McNee getting the honour for the Golden Hawks.
