QUEEN'S WOMEN'S RUGBY DEFEAT UNITED STATES U20 TEAM 76-0 IN FIRST GAME OF GARNET & GOLD CLASSIC

Queen's Women's Rugby opened the Garnet & Gold Classic with a big 76-0 win over the United States U20 Team Sunday in Ottawa, Ont.
2019 OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year and All-Canadian Back Rower Lizzie Gibson made her return to the Gaels with one try, six converts, and three penalty converts for a total of 26 points in the win.
Madison Donnelly, Maddy Kushner, and Jaden Walker added two tries each for Queen's.
"It was a really cool challenge preparing for this because we didn't know anything about them coming in," said Queen's Women's Rugby Head Coach Dan Valley after the game. "There was very little prep work that we could do to game plan for this. Our main message coming out of our last session was we can't think of this in any other terms than where were we as a squad at this time last year. And we are miles ahead of where we were at this time last year, so that's pretty exciting. What I liked most about today was the way that we actually worked through and grinded through the bits that were causing us problems, especially in our team attack coming in. The way that we worked through those as a squad in the build-up to this and then go out today and see it on full display was absolutely unbelievable. My expectations are generally sky high and this exceeded them."
Also finding the scoresheet for the Gaels were Emily Butterworth, Maggie Banks, Aleisha Rose, and Abby Vokes, with one try apiece.
It was the first of two games the Gaels will play in the Garnet & Gold Classic, where they will also take on the United States U23 Team Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Matt Anthony Field on the University of Ottawa campus.
"The process is about us," said Valley, looking ahead to Tuesday's game. "Our job now is to manage the physical recovery and enjoy this moment for right now. It's not every day that you get to have these experiences and get the outcome that we had was pretty special, so we're going to enjoy that."
